Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

At last! I finished “Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell” by Susanna Clarke. It is a fantasy novel set in early 19th century England. I will not make an attempt to describe it or even compare it to other fantasy novels I read — it’s long and I loved the fantasy and imagination, the vivid descriptions of both characters and places, the ebb and flow of the story’s multiple arcs, and the beautiful language that binds it all together.

However, I made one mistake: I bought the “Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition” via mail order, thinking “a hard cover is better than a paperback” — but this one isn’t. A little over a thousand pages in small & faint print are crammed into a REALLY small book of just 10x17cm. It’s almost 5cm thick, and because of that and the small size, it’s really difficult to hold in one’s hand, and trying to keep it open while reading requires an effort. Maybe that’s why it has taken me longer than expected to finish it…

Thoughts? Let me hear them.
