Notes From America: Welcome, 2021

The insanity of 2020 has ended. Welcome to the insanity of 2021! It starts with an absolute clusterfuck:

Politico has a nice run-down of everything that has already happened: 117th Congress kicks off with GOP civil war, calls for impeachment and plexiglass. I think this should be titled “117th Congress kicks off with GOP continuing their coup attempt” but apparently, people and the media still aren’t ready to call it a coup. (Autogolpe)

The play is clear: continue to cast doubt on the election results, in order to establish the wannabe-status of a “failed election” in the states of AZ, GA, MI, PA, WI. In preparation, Republicans have already sent their own slate of electoral votes.

Diving back into Preparing for a Disputed Presidential Election: An Exercise in Election Risk Assessment and Management Election Risk Assessment and Management I think, as mentioned above, the biggest danger is now actually Mike Pence, and how he decides to use his power to preside over the “counting of votes”.

From a fact-based point of view, the GOP has no grounds for any challenge, of course — but these are the people who also reject the pure science of climate change. Why respect certified, clean election results that have withstood test after test and challenge after challenge? The message is: well, the law and the courts couldn’t “fix” this election for us, so we’re gonna have to try something else, ourselves.

The most irritating thing to me is that even those GOP politicians who oppose the announced challenges do so stating that “it is dangerous for democracy and the trust in elections”, etc. bla bla – instead of making it clear that dozens and dozens of court cases and recounts have already proven that there haven’t BEEN any major election irregularities or even fraud. THAT would be the message that people need to hear.

I think the best case scenario will be that this “counting of votes” will drag on for a couple of days. Best case scenario. At this point though, I find it far more realistic that Pence will cave and give in to the demand of this “10 day audit” – which should result in nothing new… except that now we’re not talking about judges and the law anymore, but the GOP vacuum of law and order.

Needless to say that, once more, I’ll be more than happy to be wrong. Trump’s crowd was out in San Diego on Sunday, with their pickup trucks, waving Trump flags and repeating the lies and insanity of a stolen election… I predict quite a bit more turmoil, and it’s going to get ugly and violent.

This frightening, pathetic and dangerous theater proves one thing again: the Electoral College with all the built-in mechanisms for manipulation (unfaithful voters, the entire “counting act”, and whatnot) must be abolished. It is completely unworthy of a 21st century democracy.

But if it were for the Republicans, America will rid itself of the idea of democracy anyway. Because “their guy” didn’t win.

Thoughts? Let me hear them.
