Notes From America: Lies and Insanity

“Insanity is doing the same thing, over and over again, but expecting different results.” (unknown)

We don’t need further proof of Trump’s insanity*, of course, but I still find it worth mentioning that there are now what, 58 election-related lawsuits? All but one ended the same way – in a loss. Trump keeps shouting the same lie over and over and over and over again. It fits the definition of the quote so well – and it’s also directly out of the Nazi’s propaganda playbook, together with accusing “the other side” of what you’re actually doing: the only “steal” that actually needs to be stopped is this president’s attempted self-coup.

The repeated lying works. It did so in the past and history has taught us, and it works again now, as the “Proud Boys” neo-fascists roam the streets, public officials are being harrassed (another one directly taken from the Nazis), racist vandals hit black churches, and other GOP candidates refuse to accept their defeat.

The insanity is spreading throughout the Republican party. The New Yorker’s Susan B. Glasser has summarized the entirety of it quite precisely in It’s Not Just Trump’s War on Democracy Anymore.

“A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.” (probably not Mark Twain)

Trump expertly employs the services of Twitter to expedite the spread of his lies and insanity. Twitter is complicit in this. Perhaps it would indeed be time to strip social media companies of their protections? Just not for the reasons Trump would like to do it, of course.

I’d like to think that, if we held Twitter, Facebook and all the others accountable for the hundreds and thousands of accounts that spread unbelievable amounts of seditious and treasonous lies and conspiracy theories, it would end quickly.

Today, the Electoral College votes. Normally, a non-event, but the process itself and the anachronism of the Electoral College itself brings my eyeballs dangerously close from falling out of their sockets for the sheer amount of eye-rolling it causes:

Electors will meet in their respective states and cast paper ballots for US President. The results are then tabulated, signed, sealed and sent by registered mail to the vice president in Washington. (emphasis by me; source)

I’m expecting one or more states that Biden flipped, with a Bananarepublican legislature, to send their own slate of pro-Trump electors – in addition to the certified ones, because “safe harbor deadline” and democracy be damned. It’s simply necessary for their play to really fuck things up at the counting of votes by the vice president on January 6th, and throw the country into constitutional crisis, and chaos.

May sanity prevail, but after everything that I’ve seen now, I’m not holding my hopes up.

UPDATE: the GOP in GA, MI, NV, PA and WI apparently all had their own electors cast their own slate of votes for Trump/Pence.

*) Jenna Ellis’ insanity deserves an honorable mention, even though it’s probably just an average level of typical American Jesus-freakism and zealotry.

Thoughts? Let me hear them.
